![]() ![]() At the moment, it’s still a little too clunky to substitute for my iPad, but I’m optimistic that that will change in the very near future. I was excited to test the Brilliant two switch panel (Brilliant also offers one-, three-, and four-switch panel configurations). It integrates an astonishing number of smart home devices, like the Nest and Ecobee thermostats, the Ring doorbell, the Phillips Hue bulbs, and Sonos speakers. In addition to providing Amazon Alexa services when connected to your Amazon account, it has a microphone, a camera, a motion detector, and an alarm. The Brilliant panel is a simple computer, rather than an upgraded smart switch. It takes control of your smart house out of your pocket and drills it into the wall with a panel that anyone can use. The concept behind tech start-up Brilliant is therefore-excuse me here-brilliant. Toggling between multiple apps is annoying, and so is sitting in your house for anyone who isn't you. If you have a smart home, you most likely control it with your smartphone or personal tablet. In retrospect, we were lucky that she was even able to operate the front door. I had accidentally packed the iPad mini, which serves as our house’s smart control panel. She could even start the robot vacuum, if she wanted! No pressure or anything. She could peruse the full extent of my Apple Music subscription on our Sonos, or watch Netflix on our Apple TV. I lured her in with the promise of access to our fully-equipped smart house. Regarding availability: the first 1,000 pre-orders will cost $149, then afterwards will be $199 via Brilliant’s website, with shipping and retail availability by late Summer 2017.Earlier this year, I asked a friend to dog-sit for us while my family was on vacation. ![]() If Brilliant’s Control hub for smart home devices is as good as it sounds on paper, it might have the potential to encourage hesitant homeowners, who’ve been wondering how they could unify those devices. The controller itself includes a camera, privacy cover and microphone, which Brilliant says is an easy recipe for adding video or voice intercom to your home.īrilliant is also partnering with Target Open House in San Francisco, starting February 10th, where functioning Controls will be demoed and used by the public to control different smart home gadgets - you know - to prove that it actually works. The Control’s main input is a 720×1280 resolution, 5-inch touchscreen, but it’s supported by the motion and voice control options. The Brilliant Control also includes Amazon’s Alexa assistant, so your can ask for weather forecasts, play music, control devices, and even create preset scenes, thus controlling the mood (climate, lighting, etc.) in different rooms around your home. You can also humanize the Control, with seasonal images and a customizable standby screen to blend in with your home decor. IFTTT support is included, as are companion iOS and Android apps. The Control can speak and control those devices using on-screen sliders, function buttons - and yes, it supports dimming. It turns out that Brilliant has ticked the boxes on most of the recognizable household names, including Nest, Sonos, Philips Hue, Ring, SmartThings, Wink bulbs, Honeywell and some security systems. In my mind, the most important aspect about a product like this is mass compatibility with other smart home devices. The Control is designed to easily replace a conventional light switch, with an installation designed to take no longer than 5-10 minutes. ![]() With the surge of the smart home appliances and gadgets, the Brilliant Control is a San Mateo, California-based startup’s answer for the all-in-one smart home control panel. ![]()
